21 MONTHS’ JAIL FOR DRUNKEN ATTACK ON PARTNER

- Eryl Crump

A MAN punched his partner and grabbed her by the throat after she refused to give him money to buy beer.

Lee Simon Beck grabbed Sophie Taylor by the throat and punched her to the head.

She ran upstairs but Beck caught up with her and held her by the throat a second time and punched her again.

Beck, 32, formerly of Valley, Anglesey, pleaded guilty to charges of assault and damaging property. He appeared from custody at Caernarfon Crown Court for sentence.

Prosecuting, Sion ap Mihangel said the incident happened at about 5pm on January 17 when Beck returned to the property at Tanybryn, Valley, from a pub.

He said Beck had no bank account of his own and relied on Ms Taylor to give him money.

“He asked her for money to buy more beer but she refused, telling him she didn’t want him drinking alcohol any more.

“He picked up a cereal bowl and threw it to the floor and then picked up the games console, threw it to the floor and stamped on it,” the barrister said.

Beck then assaulted the woman who was trying to call police, who were eventually alerted.

“When officers arrived, he continued to be aggressive and was found holding a 12in knife to his throat,” added Mr ap Mihnagel.

He was arrested and interviewed but refused to answer any questions.

Defence counsel Dafydd Roberts said Beck accepted that a jail term was inevitable.

“He recognises he has problems with anger and that alcohol is a trigger.

“He will work on that while in custody,” said Mr Roberts.

Judge Timothy Petts said the offences were so serious only immediate custody was appropriate and sent Beck to jail for 21 months.
