Minister, academic and author dies at 84
ONE of the most wellknown and respected Nonconformist ministers in North Wales has died at the age of 84.
The Rev Dr Elfed ap Nefydd Roberts of Abergele was an academic, author and popular broadcaster, and a prominent figure in the religious life of Wales.
Born in Rhuddlan, he attended St Asaph Grammar School before studying at Bangor University and Westminster College.
He became Presbyterian minister in Llanelli and Bangor before he was appointed Principal of the United Theological College, Aberystwyth, in 1980.
He retired in 1997 then returned to the pastoral minister at Capel y Groes, Wrexham, following which he had part-time oversight of Capel y Berthen in Lixwm, near Holywell.
Dr ap Nefydd Roberts was the author of many theological books and was President of the General Convocation of the Presbyterian Church in Wales between 1991-92.
In 2013 he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of Bangor University in recognition of his work on theological studies.
In a tribute on social media the Presbyterian Church of Wales described him as “one of our most prominent ministers, former Principal, ex-President, historian and prolific author.”
He leaves his wife, Eiddwen, a son Jonathan and daughter Elen Mai.
His family said he wrote over 25 books and was a popular broadcaster on radio and television.
They said: “He was formerly editor of several religious publications, including Y Goleuad (the Presbyterian newspaper) and was a regular contributor until the last few months.
“He will be sorely missed.”
The private funeral service will be at St Asaph Crematorium at 12 noon on August 21 and friends will be able to tune in to a webcast of the service.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Donations in lieu of flowers will be received towards the Parkinsons Disease Society.
