Staff and children self-isolate after pupil at Llangefni school tests positive for coronavirus

-

A PUPIL at an Anglesey primary school has tested positive for coronavirus.

Parents and staff at Ysgol Corn Hir, in Llangefni were informed last week of the positive case and have been issued with guidance from Public Health Wales.

Relevant staff and pupils are being told to self-isolate for 14 days.

They have also been advised to remain alert for any symptoms of the virus, including:

A new or continuous cough, a high temperature or a loss of or change to sense of smell or taste

Those advised to self-isolate have been told to book a coronavirus test if they develop any symptoms, even if they are mild - a test can be booked by calling 119.

The school will stay open for remaining staff and pupils.

Anglesey’s chief executive, Annwen Morgan, said: “All our thoughts and best wishes are, of course, with this young pupil, the family and entire school community at this difficult time.

“We are working closely with Ysgol Corn Hir, Public Health Wales and NHS Wales Test, Trace and Protect to ensure that all the appropriate measures are in place to protect pupils, staff and the wider community.

“Contact tracing is underway and if anyone is identified as a contact of a confirmed case of COVID-19, a contact advisor from Test, Trace and Protect will be in touch with appropriate advice.”

She added: “There is currently no evidence to suggest further transmission within the school setting and Ysgol Corn Hir will remain open.”

It follows positive cases of coronavirus confirmed at Grwp Llandrillo Menai’s Abergele site, St Christophers

School in Wrexham, Coleg Cambria and Ysgol Friars in Bangor with 30 children self-isolating at Ysgol Frongoch on Rhyl Road, Denbigh, after a pupil tested positive.

Across North Wales, there have been 22 further positive coronavirus tests recorded in the 24 hours to Monday.

● Another staff member at a secondary school canteen has tested positive for coronavirus.

Ysgol Friars in Bangor, Gwynedd, sent out an email informing parents that the canteen would be closed due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

Parents were told to provide packed lunches for their children, but say the school did not tell them the reason why until around 11am on last Monday.

Now it has emerged a second staff member at Ysgol Friars has tested positive for Covid-19.

A statement from the Ysgol Friars deputy headteacher D Healy, said “In addition to the original case we have had seven negative cases, one positive and three still awaiting a result.

“I have also managed to speak to a representative of track and trace and they tell me that both positives were contracted outside school and so it seems our control measures have worked.”
