Champs strike late on to avoid opening loss

Superb Dool goal denies Lakesiders a win at Nomads

-

SAMERON DOOL hammered home a candidate for goal of the season in the 94th minute to save newly crowned champions Connah’s Quay Nomads from what seemed certain defeat on the opening day of their title defence

Nathan Peate’s back header flew over the head of Nomads goalkeeper Lewis Brass from the edge of the penalty box and gave Bala Town a 1-0 lead after only 21 minutes.

Bala meet Standard Liege in the second qualifying round of the Uefa Europa League on Thursday, while the Nomads host Georgian champions Dinamo Tbilisi.

There were debut goals for Mael Edwards and Mike Hayes in the 1-1 draw between Caernarfon Town and Penybont at The Oval.

Nathan Craig ended 22 years of waiting for a Flint Town United goal in the top-flight of Welsh club football when he sent a superb free kick over the Newtown defensive wall to secure a 1-0 home win in a game in which they had midfielder Rob Hughes sent off

Newly promoted Haver f o rdwest County’s big opening day at home was ruined when the FAW stopped Cefn Druids from travelling to Pembrokeshire due to a breach of Covid regulations.

The ruling by the league officials for a breach of the ‘Safer Return to Play Protocol’ came in the early hours of Saturday morning and left both teams unhappy.

Adrian Cieslewicz is hoping his two goals in the 3-0 win at Barry Town United will have done enough to convince The New Saints boss Scott Ruscoe to pick him for this week’s Uefa Europa League clash with B36 Torshavn.

The Polish front man finally broke the deadlock after a goal less first half at Jenner Park as the JD Cymru Premier League got underway and went on to add a second as the former champions gave themselves a boost before travelling to the Faroe Islands.

Cieslewicz used to play for B36 Torshavn five years ago and would love to return to the Torsvollur Stadium to show what he can do to his former employers in the second qualifying round game.

“It’s another big test for us away from home and the last time we played there I went up against my brother,” said Cieslewicz.

“I lived and played there for a couple of years.

“We will have a couple of players back from suspension for this week, so I just hope I’ve done enough to put myself in the manager’s mind by doing my stuff on the pitch.”

Cardiff Met had to come from behind twice before finally hitting the front to gain a thrilling 3-2 win over Aberystwyth at Park Avenue.

A superb debut double in the closing 10 minutes from Bristol Rovers teenage loanee Ollie Hulbert, and another goal from Eliot Evans, earned the three points for the students.
