More cases at schools

-

PUPILS on Anglesey have been told to isolate after fresh coronavirus cases were confirmed at two schools.

Anglesey Council confirmed two secondary students at Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni have tested positive for Covid-19.

Three primary pupils at Ysgol Gynradd Talwrn are also reported to have the virus. A link has been identified between the cases. However, unaffected classes will remain open as there is currently no evidence to suggest viral transmission within the two schools.

Annwen Morgan, Anglesey council’s chief executive, said: “These new cases emphasise that coronavirus is still a real threat to our schools as well as the wider community.

“The number of positive cases are rising on Anglesey.

“It is more important than ever to follow Welsh Government and Public Health Wales guidance, especially in relation to the whole household self-isolating if anyone shows symptoms or if advised to do so by a contact tracer.”

Parents and staff at the two affected schools have been informed.

Ms Morgan added: “Our main concern remains the wellbeing of our pupils, staff and wider community, and we will continue to work closely with our schools to limit the potential spread of virus.

“Our thoughts are, of course, also with the affected pupils and school communities.”

A pupil attending a special needs school on Anglesey has tested positive for coronavirus.

Parents and staff at Canolfan Addysg y Bont in Llangefni were informed.

Officials insist that there is “currently no evidence to suggest transmission within the school setting”.

Canolfan Addysg y Bont will remain open for unaffected classes.

The Welsh Government has said it couldn’t rule out an October half-term ‘circuit breaker’ to bring in more tough measures nationally but stop short of a full lockdown.
