WILLIAM AND KATE’S ANGLESEY BEACH CLEAN SHOWN ON TV DOC

- Joel Leaver

A royal beach clean on Anglesey featured in a new documentary about climate change on ITV.

A Planet for Us All aired on Monday night, providing an insight into Prince William’s environmental work.

Film cameras have followed the 38-year-old royal over the last two years for the special programme.

It documents the Duke of Cambridge’s efforts to reduce climate change across both the UK and Africa.

This included Prince William and Kate Middleton visiting their former neighbourhood on Anglesey.

The couple lived in the area as newlyweds and returned earlier this year, as shown in the documentary.

During their visit, the pair participated in a Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) clean up on Newborough beach.

In the ITV special, it’s explained that one of the biggest threats to wildlife is plastic pollution in such areas.

Frequent cleans by the SAS however have led Anglesey to become the first ‘plastic free’ county in the UK.

Sian Sykes, the group’s regional rep, joined the royals during the clean-up, calling it a “huge honour.”

She said the beach was “very special” to them and added that it’s “nice that they’re giving some love back.”

The activist is seen in the documentary showing a tin full of cotton bud sticks – which she explained take around 150 years to “break down in a marine environment.”

Remnants of such objects are subsequently eaten by wildlife, much to the detriment of their health.

Kate herself identifies a balloon washed up on the beach, which prompted a response by her husband.

Prince William commented that he’s given the couple’s three children “such a talking to about balloons.”

In the programme, he further explained: “It’s in everyone’s interest that we protect these sorts of areas.”

The Prince noted that it was “nice to be back” on Anglesey, calling the experience “very nostalgic.”

He however said that, when they lived in the area, he noticed some areas were “really bad” with pollution.

Sian explained: “What we’re trying to do is encourage people to be more responsible with their actions.”

She commented that the aim of such groups and activism is to “break the habit with single use plastics.”

Prince William: A Planet for Us All is currently available on the catch-up service at the ITV Hub www.itv.com.
