BANGOR ROTARY CLUB: Like many other organisations Bangor Rotary Club has had to adapt its activities now that large gatherings are not permitted and opportunities for fundraising to support local communities have all but evaporated! Conscious of similar problems for vital local charities, the Rotary Club has dipped into its waning funds to support the 20 charities that normally have free pitches at the sadly cancelled August Bank Holiday Sunday Rotary Charity Fair on Beaumaris Green, plus made donations to Bangor Food Bank, St. David’s Hospice and a good number of other charitable organisations. Members have also been very active in delivering supplies to the housebound, distributing a local benefactor’s gift of face masks to appropriate organisations and schools, making scrub sets (from old colourful duvet covers!) and scrubs washing bags from pillowcases. Rotarians have also collected and recycled masses of strong bags for the Food Banks to use to distribute supplies and supported charitable quizzes. Some members have used their crafting skills to stockpile items that will be given to local charities to sell at their own fundraising craft fairs when these can recommence. They still managed to ensure that the Primary School Leavers’ dictionaries have been distributed to Bangor and Beaumaris schools and - socially distanced - presented a citation to Our Lady’s RC Primary School, Bangor, Rotakids in recognition of their outstanding environmental and charitable work (for Marie Curie, MacMillan and Polio Eradication) during the past year. Now that Rotary Funds are diminishing fast another exciting initiative is planned. With the generous kind help of Simon Bower, Morgan Evans auctions, an on-line charity auction to support local charities is being organised now. Rotarians have dug deep and donated 124 lots of interesting antiques, ceramics, glassware, watches, pens, model cars, plus many varied collectors’ items - not least 55 Welsh Rugby Union official programmes from 1953-2001including 4 Triple Crowns and 2 Grand Slams! Full details of the on-line charity auction will be announced and circulated when arrangements are finalised.

Let us hope it will soon be possible for us all to meet up again on Thursday afternoons.

BENLLECH AND DISTRICT GOOD TURN SCHEME: This is to report that due to the current Coronavirus crisis the Good Turn Scheme has to be suspended. The decision was taken very reluctantly and we sincerely hope that “Normal Service will be Resumed As Soon As Possible”. In the meantime although the monthly meetings are cancelled together with all lifts to shops and appointments, we are hoping to establish a telephone contact scheme where we can talk to people living alone to ensure that they are coping. If a service is needed such as shopping, prescription collection they will be referred to someone who is able to provide that service.
