Be social and back big breakfast drive

- Andrew Forgrave

IN any normal year farmers would be preparing to gather for communal breakfasts around farmhouse tables across Wales.

Given the Covid-19 lockdown, however, the FUW’s annual Farmhouse Breakfast Week is having to take a different approach this year.

The union has joined forces with butchers, farm shops and cafes to launch a social media campaign (#breakfastweek2021) and promote local Welsh produce.

The idea is to get the public involved with breakfast week by purchasing locally sourced ingredients for breakfast.

In doing so the FUW hopes the campaign will raise vital funds for the DPJ Foundation, rural mental health charity.

“We all want to spread the word about the fantastic produce that is available right on our doorstep,” said union president Glyn Roberts.

“We hope everyone will support this campaign and take time out to enjoy the wonderful, sustainably grown, breakfast food we have on offer here in Wales.”

Although people from different households are unable to meet, there’s no reason why individual families can’t celebrate Farmhouse Breakfast Week, said Mr Roberts.

This year’s event started on Monday and runs to Sunday, January 24.

“The ethos of sitting around the kitchen table to enjoy the wonderful produce our farmers produce – from eggs, cheese, bacon, sausages to butters and yoghurts– is still very much do-able at home with our closest family,” he added.

The campaign is asking participating consumers to make a small donation to the DPJ Foundation via FUW’s breakfast week page on Just Giving.
