Police called to mask protest at Tesco Extra

SHOPPERS LEFT ‘UNABLE TO GET INTO STORE’

- Andrew Forgrave

POLICE had to be called to deal with an “anti-mask” protest at a Tesco store in Gwynedd.

Reports on social media said the protest in Bangor was organised by people opposing the need to wear face coverings to protect others against Covid-19.

One shopper said things were “all kicking off” when he left the store.

Police officers were blocking the entrance and the place was in “chaos”, he said.

Another tweeted, with a “rolling eyes” emoji, that he had been turned away from the store because of the protest.

Eyewitnesses said around half a dozen people were involved in the demonstration and that an estimated 20 shoppers were left waiting outside the store and unable to get in.

North Wales Police said it would be releasing a statement about the demonstration (see below).

Bystanders reported seeing a large number of officers at the store.

They said four or five police vehicles arrived after the demonstration got under way.

“So many cops,” said one. “Don’t turn up!”

The protest drew withering condemnation on social media.

“Disgrace, as if the NHS hasn’t got enough on their plate,” said one.

“Shame on this crowd, need a good heavy fine.”

Tesco have been approached for comment.

On Friday, First Minister Mark Drakeford was asked for his views on face coverings given that other countries are now requiring citizens to wear better quality masks.

Speaking at the Welsh Government’s coronavirus briefing, he said advice on face masks is regularly reviewed by the country’s Chief Medical Officer.

Current advice is that if you are in enclosed space, then face coverings should be worn.

On public transport or in shops, they are obligatory.
