Trucker drove 11 miles on this tyre BLOW-OUT LEFT DEBRIS ON A55

- Steve Bagnall

ATRUCKER drove 11 miles across North Wales on a wrecked wheel after suffering a huge blow-out on the A55.

Police received reports that a tyre had blown on a lorry near the Llanfairfechan roundabout shortly before 5.30am on Friday.

But despite the obvious problem, the trucker continued on the A55 westbound over the Britannia Bridge – leaving tyre debris sprawled across the carriageway in the vehicle’s wake.

When officers caught up with the driver at Menai Bridge, they found the motorist had been driving on a tyre stripped to its rim.

The driver told officers he “wasn’t aware” the tyre was gone – and has now been reported for careless driving.

A statement by the North Wales Police (NWP) Roads Policing Unit, said: “A HGV driver has been reported for careless driving after one of our officers found the vehicle parked up with this.

“Shortly before 5:30am today (Friday) we received reports of a HGV having had a tyre blow out near to the Llanfairfechan roundabout.

“The HGV had continued to travel westbound over the Britannia Bridge, leaving tyre debris in the carriageway as it travelled along.

“A short while later an officer located the HGV parked in Menai Bridge where it was discovered to have been driving on its rim with the mud guard missing and the brackets hanging against the suspension.

“The driver said that he “wasn’t aware”.

“He has since been reported for the offence of careless driving.

“With the assistance of other officers, debris was removed from the carriageway as it posed a risk to other vehicles.

“Doesn’t bear thinking what could have happened.”
