Warning over young children riding scramblers along busy road

POLICE SEIZE BIKE AND SAY: ‘WE DON’T WANT TO BE KNOCKING ON DOORS WITH BAD NEWS’

- Owen Evans

PARENTS have been given a stark warning by police after children as young as 12 were seen riding scrambler bikes on a busy industrial estate.

Officers were called to the Llandygai Industrial Estate in Bangor after youngsters were seen riding off-road bikes in the middle of the road without wearing helmets.

The force has now warned parents that they did not want to have to deliver “bad news” to them about a crash involving their child.

A spokesman for the roads policing unit said: “We received some calls earlier reporting a group of children riding trial bikes in the middle of the road on the Industrial estate in Llandygai, Bangor. One of the team went down to have a look and saw a group on bikes – wearing no helmets and riding in the road.

“The group managed to disperse however the officer managed to seize one bike (pictured) and took the 12-year-old rider home to speak to his parents.

“Regardless what you class as ‘fun’ – the industrial estate (which is busy with moving traffic such as HGVs, vans and other vehicles throughout the day) is NOT the place for a child to be riding their trial/off road bike.”

They added: “Whilst the officer was there a HGV driver approached him to say one of the children almost collided with his vehicle.

“We urge all parents/ carers to know where their children are and where they go to use these bikes.

“The last thing we want is to be knocking on people’s doors to deliver bad news.

“Patrols of the area will continue.”
