Bangor the worst-hit area of the county

-

DATA shows Bangor city is officially the worst-hit Covid area in Gwynedd.

With almost 700 confirmed Covid cases in the city since the pandemic began, Bangor is the area with the highest cases in the county.

In October it became the only area of Gwynedd to be given local lockdown restrictions due to the soaring numbers of people being diagnosed with coronavirus. Eight of the city’s wards were placed under Bangor’s Health Protection Zone - Dewi, Glyder, Hendre, Menai, Deiniol, Marchog, Garth and Hirael.

Now the City Council are determined to see a way forward for the city when restrictions are lifted but say they are putting people’s safety first.

Mayor of Bangor Cllr John Wyn Williams said: “The Covid19 pandemic has had a significant impact on Bangor.

“The City Council has re-focused its priorities over the past year to provide as much support as possible to individuals and our communities.

“Our Councillors have helped the most vulnerable since the beginning of the first lockdown, and we are fully aware of the hardship that continues to face individuals, businesses and groups across the city.

“We have worked closely with our partners since March 2020 and continue to do so, and our Covid-19 Support Grant Committee continues to provide targeted help and support, including the food share scheme and Coed Mawr food bank.

“As we look forward to restrictions easing in the future, our priorities will then shift to working with others on the Covid-19 recovery plan for Bangor.

“Until then, our focus remains on keeping our citizens as safe as possible.”

Gwynedd has the second lowest confirmed cases in North Wales standing at a total of 2,673.
