Hydrogen hub cash delight

-

A £4.8M funding boost to develop Wales’ first ‘Hydrogen Hub’ has been welcomed on Anglesey.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak hoped it would help Wales “pave the way to a greener future,” while creating high skilled jobs and building the infrastructure to “drive growth in key sectors and build back better”.

Earmarked for Holyhead, the centre will be designed to produce and distribute green hydrogen made using renewables for use in HGVs, helping to decarbonise the economy and reduce the need on traditional fossil fuels.

Developed by social enterprise Menter Môn, in partnership with Anglesey Council, Scottish firm Logan Energy has secured the contract to support the delivery of the hub with the Welsh Government also providing funding for the technical designs.

According to Menter Môn, the funding “will go a long way” to ensuring the hub becomes a reality.

The proposals would see the production of hydrogen at Holyhead as well as a fuelling distribution centre.

MD, Dafydd Gruffydd said: “This is a huge boost to the project in Holyhead.

“Our aim as we develop the site is to ensure Anglesey and the wider North Wales region are in a strong position to play a key part in this sector which offers so many opportunities in terms of jobs, skills development and the supply chain.”

MP Virginia Crosbie said: “Here on Ynys Môn, the tangible result of this desire for green growth and levelling up is the proposed £4.8m investment in the Holyhead Hydrogen Hub that will produce and distribute this green fuel and employ at least 30 people in highly skilled jobs. I am delighted to see it after pushing ministers for the money.”
