SOROPTIMISTS: Mrs Kirsty Thompson, Head of Fundraising/Major Gifts Programme at Awyr Las Ysbyty Gwynedd was the guest speaker recently and she gave a comprehensive insight into where donations to Awyr Las are going. They manage over 444 different funds with 40% being directed to cancer care. The Team works closely with healthcare colleagues, so have an in-depth understanding of the needs and priorities of the different funds. This means they can make sure that our contributions makes the biggest possible difference to patients and their families. There are dedicated support team members in each of the three Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board areas. The members of the Awyr Las Charity Committee which governs the Charity, the Fund Advisors who oversee the individual funds and the Awyr Las Support Team members who offer advice and support for the charity’s supporters all pledge to be honest, open and treat supporters with respect. SOROPTIMISTS: Eleri Ellis and Debra Jones, Complaints Advocates, North Wales Community Health Council were the guest speakers at the meeting via Zoom on 2 March. There are times we all need help to speak up about concerns/complaints if we – patients, carers, relatives – feel let down by our local health board or social care service. It can be difficult to know who or where to turn to or what to do. We may not always feel confident about getting in touch with the local health authority or hospital; know who to contact; the right questions to ask, or what exactly we want to say or how to say it. The Advocacy Service can help raise those concerns/complaints through its role in providing a free, independent, confidential, non-legal, client-led service. They are able to help patients or their representative in making a complaint under the NHS Complaints Procedure. The Advocacy staff are well-trained and committed to the central principles of independence, confidentiality, best interest and empowerment. All services are conducted in a friendly and professional manner, the end aim being to resolve issues satisfactorily, but also encouraging the health board to learn from the experiences shared and improving their services. BENLLECH AND DISTRICT GOOD TURN SCHEME: This is to report that due to the current Coronavirus crisis the Good Turn Scheme has to be suspended. The decision was taken very reluctantly and we sincerely hope that “Normal Service will be Resumed As Soon As Possible”. In the meantime although the monthly meetings are cancelled together with all lifts to shops and appointments, we are hoping to establish a telephone contact scheme where we can talk to people living alone to ensure that they are coping. If a service is needed such as shopping, prescription collection they will be referred to someone who is able to provide that service.
