High street shut after car crashes into post

-

BANGOR High Street was temporarily closed to vehicles after a car collided with a post outside a cafe.

Police were called to the street on Wednesday afternoon after the back of the vehicle crashed into a structural supporting post for the canopy outside the Fat Cat cafe.

Concerns about the safety of the structure outside the cafe meant that the road was shut to cars.

It comes just weeks after the road reopened to traffic following an 18-month closure caused by a major fire.

A police spokesperson said: “We received a call shortly before 2pm yesterday following reports that a car had collided into a structural supporting post of the Fat Cat cafe on Bangor High Street.

“Following concerns over the security of the building, officers have closed the road until further notice and people are being asked to avoid the area.”

On Thursday, the road remained shut to cars, with scaffolding put up in front of the cafe to ensure the structural integrity of the canopy.

The closure came during the same month that the road finally reopened to traffic, 18 months after a fire damaged buildings.

Firefighters were called to a blaze in a flat above a Japanese restaurant in December 2019 which resulted in the section between the city’s Cathedral and the Varsity bar being closed off to all traffic due to the need for temporary scaffolding on the street to keep both standing.

Eighteen months on, the full reopening of Wales’ longest high street took place, much to the delight of many traders after a frustrating year and a half.
