Major firework displays called off over Covid

- Harri Evans

THREE major firework displays and bonfire nights across North Wales have been cancelled due to concerns over coronavirus rates and regulations.

Organisers of the displays that were set to take place in Amlwch, Beaumaris and Denbigh have all confirmed that their respective events have been called off for this year due to safety concerns over Covid-19.

It marks the second year in a row where the towns’ firework displays have been cancelled after all major displays and bonfire nights were called off last October due to the pandemic.

Each of the three cancelled displays have been backed by their organisers to return in 2022.

Other major displays, such as the ones in Holyhead, Caernarfon, Llandudno and Wrexham are set to go ahead as usual pending any further changes to the coronavirus situation.

Beaumaris Town Council posted: “Unfortunately due to problems concerning crowd management and Covid regulations, the Bonfire Committee have reluctantly decided not to go ahead with the display this year.

“Beaumaris Town Council continues to support the Bonfire Committee and other local organised events.”

One of the organisers of the display in Amlwch said: “After much deliberation and consulting with various public agencies we have made a decision to call off the Community Bonfire and Fireworks night on the 5th November.

“We haven’t come to this decision lightly as it’s an event we enjoy along with everyone else, but Covid cases are rising and the hospital is busy.

“We just can’t put anyone at risk unnecessarily.

“All the money we took on the gate 2 years ago and funds raised recently is ring fenced for a bigger and better event in 2022.”

A statement from Denbigh Town Council read: “Following on from Denbigh Town Council’s September Full Council meeting of the 22nd, one of the items discussed was the annual fireworks event.

“It is with great disappointment that I advise that this year’s event will not be going ahead.

“The decision was not taken lightly. The town councillors had to take into consideration the advice received from their Health & Safety Consultant, Fireworks provider, CADW as well as the up to date instructions from the Welsh Government.

“Whilst this is a disappointment for the residents and visitors to Denbigh the town councillors felt that the safety of the Councillors, Staff and volunteers was paramount. Very much hope that we are able to hold the event safely in 2022.”
