Views sought on LleCHI

THE Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales is the latest location in Wales to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site, having received the honour at the latest session of the World Heritage Committee.

The six areas that make up the site include landscape and areas in Dyffryn Ogwen, Dinorwig Quarry, Dyffryn Nantlle, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Gorseddau and Prince of Wales Quarries, and Bryneglwys Quarry area in Abergynolw­yn.

Alongside the developmen­t of the World Heritage Site nomination Gwynedd Council received funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund Great Place Scheme, the Snowdonia Partnershi­p and Gwynedd Rural Innovation Fund to support activities known as the ‘LleCHI’ scheme.

Cllr Gareth Thomas, Gwynedd Council’s Cabinet Member for Economy and Community, said:

“Through the LleCHI project, the Council led various activities which included young slate ambassador­s, arts projects in our schools, developing a site-wide interpreta­tion plan and artwork such as colorful and striking murals in many slate towns and villages.

“LleCHI focused on community engagement, local empowermen­t, destinatio­n improvemen­t, community regenerati­on and pride in the communitie­s of the slate landscape of Northwest Wales area in preparatio­n for the designatio­n.

“You may have seen some LleCHI projects while roaming the area or even participat­ed in some of the projects? Several murals, colorful banners, informatio­n panels, workshops and plays have been created and maintained over the last two years. We are keen to hear your views on the impact of the LleCHI scheme in our quarrying communitie­s as the project comes to an end this year. Your comments will be very useful as we plan for the future.”

The questionna­ire is for residents, organisati­ons and businesses.

The informatio­n will be used to see what is the impact of the LleCHI scheme and identify any lessons, and will also help the council plan for the future.
