Covid outbreak at hospital ‘is over’

NO NEW CASES AT YSBYTY GWYNEDD FOR 28 DAYS

- Owen Evans

HEALTH bosses have declared that a coronavirus outbreak at a North Wales hospital is now over.

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board have “closed” the outbreak which was declared at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor back in August.

It was one of several outbreaks recorded at hospitals in North Wales recently.

In an update on the situation, Mandy Jones, director of nursing at Ysbyty Gwynedd, said: “It has now been 28 days since any new positive cases of Covid-19 were identified as part of the outbreak at Ysbyty Gwynedd.

“As a result, we have declared that the outbreak is now closed.

“We would like to thank our staff for their support, professionalism and diligence in helping to manage the outbreak and our thoughts are with the families and patients who have been affected.

“Covid-19 remains a significant risk, as seen by the increasing numbers in our communities, which serves as a timely reminder that the threat has not gone away.

“We will remain vigilant and continue to maintain stringent infection prevention standards at all times throughout all of our sites to keep patients and staff safe.”

The outbreak was first declared on August 27, when the health board confirmed cases on two wards at the hospital, as well as an outbreak at Ysbyty Eryri in Caernarfon.

In September, they confirmed they were still dealing with the outbreak, and confirmed there were also outbreaks impacting a small number of people at Glan Clwyd Hospital and Llandudno Hospital, before later confirming cases at Colwyn Bay Hospital.

On September 10, restrictions were introduced on accessing hospitals to try and contain the situation.

An update has not yet been provided on the situation at Glan Clwyd Hospital, Llandudno Hospital and Colwyn Bay Hospital.
