Warm welcome for defence personnel easing pressures on our ambulance service

- With Ynys Môn MP Virginia Crosbie

YLR wythnos dwythaf yr oedd cyhoeddiad y fydd o 110 personél amddiffyn yn cael ei defnyddio i cefnogi yr ymddiriedolaeth gwasanaeth ambiwlans Cymru o 14 Hydref, yn gweithio fel gyrwyr di-argyfwng. Maer tasg yma yn disgwyl i parhau tan diwedd mis Tachwedd. AST week it was announced that 110 Defence personnel will be deployed to support the Welsh Ambulance Service Trust (WAST) from 14th October, working as non-emergency drivers. The task is expected to last until the end of November.

The support from the UK Government is being provided through a Military Aid to the Civil Authorities (MACA) request. The task will help to ease pressures resulting from the pandemic and ensure the ambulance trust can continue to provide their essential service, attending life-threatening calls quickly.

Defence personnel will augment the ambulance service with non-emergency drivers who will not operate under blue light conditions. They will attend lower priority calls to help to free up WAST resources for emergency calls where there is an immediate risk to life, such as cardiac arrests.

Over the last 19 months the pandemic has presented a challenge to our brave and dedicated Welsh Ambulance Service crews like no other. They are owed an immense debt of gratitude and I commend them for their invaluable contribution in our struggle against Covid-19 and for all that they do.

The last couple of months in particular have inflicted immense pressures on our ambulance service and this has resulted, for too many people, in unacceptable waiting times for ambulances.

I warmly welcome this deployment and I am confident that the support of our Armed Forces will help to save lives across Wales over the coming months.

I have always been determined to be the best MP that I can for you, the people of Ynys Môn. I believe that key to being a good MP is being accountable and so this month I have produced my Annual Report and over the last week it has been delivered to every household across our island. The report highlights much of the work that I have done to deliver on my priorities for Anglesey: to secure investment, to create high skilled long-term jobs and training opportunities, to place Anglesey at the centre of the UK’s march towards net zero, to secure Wylfa Newydd and to help our precious Welsh language and culture to flourish.

The report was printed by WO Jones printers in Llangefni (and I must, as always, thank them for their superb service) and was translated by the amazing team at Cymen. The printing and delivery was funded through donations and not a penny of tax payer money was used.

You should have received your copy by now but if you have not then please contact call my office on 01407 644 645 or email me at virginia.crosbie. mp@parliament.uk and I will send you a copy directly.

Last week I attended the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester and I used a series of major events as an opportunity to champion levelling up our economy and Anglesey becoming a freeport.

I also chaired a prestigious panel discussion on “Nuclear: Powering and Levelling Up in Wales” with leading industry players including the Nuclear Industry Association and Bechtel to examine the overwhelming case for new nuclear at Wylfa Newydd.

On behalf of my constituents, all of you, I met with the National Trust, the Alzheimer’s Society, Deaf Children’s Society, British Heart Foundation, Marie Curie, Guide Dogs Association, the NFU and Cancer Research UK.

This was an event that I was determined to make the most out of to champion our wonderful island and to unlock our economic potential and not even the Prime Minister was able to avoid my schedule! I met with him to discuss our island’s priorities and gave him a copy of my Annual Report.

I enjoyed attending my first Conference in person as an MP but, as I am every week, I was delighted to come home to Anglesey. It was a pleasure to meet so many of my Ynys Gybi ward constituents on Friday at my latest face to face surgery at St Ffraid’s Church Hall in Trearddur Bay, and to help them with their concerns and priorities.

This is the last week of recess and I am spending the week on a residential course with the excellent Nant Gwrtheyrn team to improve my Welsh. Learning this beautiful language has been truly one of the highlights of being your MP and I am really looking forward to developing my skills further.
