Cyclist suffered‘multiple injuries’ in fatal collision
A PIONEERING palliative care consultant and “doting grandfather” suffered multiple injuries when he collided with a bus while cycling down Snowdonia’s Pen y Pass road, an inquest heard on Thursday.
Dr Andrew Fowell, 66, of Rhos Newydd, Llangoed, Beaumaris, lost control of his bike between Pen y Pass and Nant Peris in Snowdonia, slid on to his side and collided with a bus travelling up the pass at around 11.30am on September 25.
Dr Fowell was pronounced dead at the scene and was formally identified to a police officer by a friend, the hearing in Caernarfon was told.
Adjourning the full inquest pending an investigation into his death, acting senior coroner Katie Sutherland
said a provisional cause of death following a postmortem examinations was given as “multiple chest and neck injuries”.
Following his death, Mr Fowell’s family issued a statement describing him as “a proud father” and “doting grandfather” who would be “sorely missed”.
Dr Fowell (pictured), a retired palliative care consultant at Ysbyty Gwynedd, moved to Anglesey in 1997 to take up the post and set up the Palliative Care Service for North Wales.
Betsi Cadawaladr University Health Board also paid tribute to the passionate cyclist, highlighting how Dr Fowell was instrumental in setting up special care for people who were dying.
Having retired in 2013, Dr Fowell was still actively involved with teaching and was a trustee for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
In 2019, Dr Fowell cycled from Istanbul to Anglesey with his two friends, raising £25,000 for St David’s Hospice and The Motor Neurone Disease Association.
