Star of C’mon Midffild Mei Jones dies aged 68

-

THE famous Welsh scriptwriter and actor Mei Jones has sadly died at the age of 68.

He was probably best known for his performances as Wali Tomos in the hugely popular S4C sitcom C’mon Midffild, a role which he acted and co-created.

He was one of Welsh language television’s best-loved characters and his death has prompted an outpouring of grief and sympathy for the loved ones he leaves behind.

Born in 1953, Jones was a talented footballer as a youngster and was selected for Wales at youth level. He played for teams in Bangor, Beaumaris, Amlwch, Llanrug and also for Pontrhydfendigaid whilst at university in Aberystwyth.

Along with co-writer Alun Ffred Jones, Mei Jones won the BAFTA Cymru for the best drama series for C’mon Midffild in 1993.

He was at the centre of controversy in 1990 though, when he and fellow C’mon Midffild star Bryn Fon were detained by police and questioned in relation to the Meibion Glyndwr attacks on holiday homes in Gwynedd. No charges were brought against the pair however.

In a tribute to him, his C’mon Midffild co-writer Alun Ffred Jones told S4C: “Mei was a talented actor and an original scriptwriter who always gave his best and expected that from everyone who worked with him.

“I could and probably should have written more but we can thank you for all that you have done.

“He made a very significant contribution to the Welsh entertainment scene.”

There were many messages of sympathy on Twitter.

Gwenfair Vaughan said: “Mei Jones was a great actor who I had the pleasure of working with and spending a great time in his company. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.”

Esyllt Sears said: “One of the best Welsh comedy characters in the best Welsh sitcom. An extremely important man in the history of comedy in Wales and one who has given us hours of laughter as a family.”

He is survived by four children Ela, Lois, Steffan and Aron and also three grandchildren.
