THE inquest in to the death of a popular former footballer who played for Bangor City and Wolves has opened.

John Gwyndaf Owen, known as Gwyndaf or by his nickname “Daffy”, passed away on March 8.

The inquest heard how the 47-year-old, who was well-known for his footballing talents, was found unconscious at his home address by his brother, Richard Gareth Owen last month.

The emergency services were called but sadly Mr Owen, a farmer supervisor, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Speaking during the brief hearing assistant coroner for North West Wales Sarah Riley said: “John Gwyndaf Jones was pronounced dead by a paramedic and identified by his brother to the police. He was found collapsed on the floor in an outbuilding at his home address.

“Despite the best efforts of his brother and the ambulance service he was pronounced dead at the scene. Following a post-mortem a provisional cause of death as given as hanging.

“The inquest has now been opened but will be adjourned pending further investigations.”

Mr Owen joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1990 as a trainee and spent two years at Molyneux before moving closer to home to join Bangor City in 1992.

He then spent a couple of seasons at the Farrar Road side before joining his home village club Llannerchymedd in 1994. He played in several successful seasons back at his home side, before eventually retiring in the early 2000s.

Following his death Llannerchymedd FC put out a tribute message on their social media page saying that Mr Owen would be “sorely missed” by everyone at the club and all of the community of Llannerchymedd.

Jamie Garner said: “I played with Gwyndaf as an apprentice at Wolves. Great left foot but above all a great lad. Had loads of laughs with him. RIP.”

Medwyn Evans said: “Rest in peace Gwyndaf, huge lost to the village and to his family.”

John Lee said: “Gwyndaf was a lovely lad, always down to Earth and always had time for a chat. Last time we were in The Bull in Llan he insisted on buying me a pint! Parch (respect)”
