M-sparc developing hi-tech collaboration with Eisteddfod

-

THE National Eisteddfod has been discussing hosting parts of the Eisteddfod over the web in the future as part of a new partnership with the Anglesey-based M-sparc science park, it was announced last week.

The aim is to ensure the accessibility of the festival and offer opportunities for everyone to be able to join, but without disrupting the face-to-face offer.

Through the collaboration, M-sparc will develop the Science and Technology Village in order to celebrate innovation in the Welsh language and lead the work of supporting skills for young people, too.

At last week’s festival in Tregaron, M-sparc managing director Pryderi ap Rhisiart said: “We’ve realised it’s great to come here, for the people who can but there are people with anxieties who don’t like to come to places like this, or with disabilities in terms of accessibility.

“We’re all used to online Zoom and Team calls by now so we will look at the opportunities to broadcast some of the events from the Babell Len (Literary pavilion) and Societies halls over the web.

“It’s another way of giving people access to the Eisteddfod and enjoying it without taking anything away from the Eisteddfod.

“There’s nothing like being on the Maes and meeting people and enjoying the atmosphere.

“But for those who can’t - how can we serve them?”

He added he has not come across any examples of hybrid festivals but it is a pattern becoming increasingly familiar in the business world.

“Of course, there are hybrid events where people can attend and enjoy on the web, network and see their friends and so on.

“It’s happening more and more in business but I’m not aware of a festival like this that has been done, but that’s why it’s exciting,” he said.
