Royal approval given to charity
A LOCAL charity has been honoured with the King’s Award.
H.O.P.E (Helping Others Positively Engage) in Community were presented with the award for voluntary service by the King’s representative, Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire Dame Hilary Chapman.
At a service at Barnsley Baptist Church on Union Street, the charity was recognised for its work supporting the local community, which it does by running various projects including classes on how to cook on a budget, weekly baby and toddler group and a foodbank.
Dame Hilary Chapman said: “As the King’s personal representative in the county I particularly look forward to the King’s Award presentations as it affords me the opportunity to see some of the remarkable work that our voluntary sector organisations are carrying out in South Yorkshire.
“On Saturday I presented our first 2023 award to H.O.P.E in Community in Barnsley.
“It is humbling to see so many people volunteering, some with challenges of their own, but still wanting to give their time, skills, and enthusiasm to benefit the people of Barnsley and the surrounding area.
“H.O.P.E is making a considerable difference locally and is deserving of its outstanding reputation in the area. I would like to offer my congratulations to everyone involved with the organisation and all those who give their time so willingly.”
Peter Robertshaw, founder and chair of H.O.P.E, added:
“It is a great honour as only one of seven charities in South Yorkshire to have received the prestigious King’s Award for Voluntary Service, to be here today, and to be able to celebrate this great achievement with everyone.
“I am proud of everyone for all their hard work and dedication to the work of H.O.P.E in Community, and the individuals, families, and communities we support.”
