Bright spark Ewan aims to be UK’s top apprentice
AN apprentice from East Renfrewshire has reached the semi-finals of a national trade competition.
Ewan McGibbon, who is studying electrical installation at Glasgow Clyde College’s Cardonald campus, is one of 33 entrants shortlisted in the Screwfix Trade Apprentice contest.
He was nominated by his employers, T.R. Aitchison Electricians.
Ewan, 20, now hopes he can go on to reach the final in London in May, when the top 10 apprentices will be out to impress industry experts.
The overall winner will receive a £10,000 ‘trade bundle’ made up of tools, tech and training.
Ewan, from Giffnock, said: “I can’t believe I’ve reached the semi-finals.
“For me, an apprenticeship isn’t just about learning new skills, it has helped me unlock a passion.
“To reach the semi-finals is a result of my dedication and determination to embark on a successful career in the trades.
“I’m really proud to have made it to the semi-finals and I’m excited to showcase my story so far.”
Jack Wallace, marketing director of Screwfix, has praised Ewan and the other semi-finalists.
He said: “The skills gap facing our industry is showing no signs of slowing down, so it remains as crucial as ever to highlight just how rewarding a career in the trades can be.
“Regardless of who makes the final ten, they should all be incredibly proud of their achievement and I have no doubt they have inspired even more people to consider a career in the trades.”
