Sweet talk from David

-

PEOPLE who head along to an interesting event at a Barrhead church today are sure of a sweet time.

David McDonald will deliver a talk about confectionery as members of the East Renfrewshire U3A (University of the Third Age) group stage their latest meeting.

Non-members are also welcome to attend the event, which takes place in the community hall at St Andrew’s Parish Church, starting at 1.50pm.

Tea and coffee will be served afterwards.

The group, which started in Barrhead in 2008 and now has a membership of 600, stages meetings on the third Wednesday of each month.

These alternate between St Andrew’s Parish Church and the hall at Broom Parish Church, in Newton Mearns.

Marbe McNeill, the group’s chairperson, said: “Our monthly meetings are an opportunity to find out more about the U3A, which is an international movement aimed at keeping active in your ‘third age’ – when no longer working or involved in childcare.”

As well as the regular meetings, the U3A offers more than 70 ‘interest groups’ covering a range of hobbies and opportunities to socialise.

These include several walking groups, reading groups and language groups, as well as groups that go on outings to theatres, cinemas and places of interest.

Any member can start a group of their own choice and support to do this is available.

Marbe added: “Our annual subscription is £24 – a mere £2 per month for the opportunity to make new friends and start new hobbies.”
