‘There needs to be something done’

A CONCERNED councillor has called for action to address issues caused by flooding at a community hub in Barrhead.

Chris Lunday said the problem within the grounds of Arthurlie House has been ongoing for months, with nearby residents affected.

The SNP politician has been contacted by a number of people who live in Levern Crescent and say water has repeatedly poured into their gardens, causing damage to huts and outhouses.

Councillor Lunday, who represents Barrhead, Liboside and Uplawmoor, contacted East Renfrewshire Council to raise their concerns.

He said he was advised by the local authority that an inspection of the location will be carried out and the flooding issues will be investigated with a view to having drains cleaned and, if necessary, repaired.

Councillor Lunday has now asked for an update on the progress being made, as residents have faced further issues due to heavy rainfall over the past two weeks.

He told the Barrhead News: “There is clearly an issue at Arthurlie House.

“The flooding is causing damage to the back gardens of residents in Levern Crescent.

“The council needs to take action on this before more damage is done.

“The residents have puddles in their gardens and the water is causing damage to huts and outhouses.

“There needs to be something done without delay, due to the heavy rainfall.”

Arthurlie House, which is situated within Arthurlie Park, is used by a number of community groups for meetings, as well as the likes of dance lessons and art classes.

It is also used for functions such as children’s birthday parties and wedding receptions.

Councillor Lunday believes sandbags should be used to protect residents’ property while the flooding problem is investigated.

He added: “I have requested that sandbags are placed at the fences of residents’ gardens to alleviate some of the flooding.”

East Renfrewshire Council was approached for comment.
