POIGNANT tributes have been paid to former Provost Judith Edmondson after she died at the age of 91.

Mrs Edmondson was civic head of the old Eastwood District Council from 1984 until 1988.

She also served as a Conservative councillor for the Giffnock West ward.

Mrs Edmondson spent her final years at Newton House Care Home, in Newton Mearns, before her death on Friday, April 5.

Eastwood MSP Jackson Carlaw, of the Scottish Conservatives, said she will be sadly missed.

He added: “Judy was a ball of fun and brought a huge personality to the role of Provost at Eastwood District Council.

“Together with her husband Peter, they were quite the double act, working closely with the local MP for East Renfrewshire Allan Stewart, particularly when local government reorganisation came in the mid-1990s.”

Mr Edmondson, a former chairman of the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice, in Glasgow, was also involved in politics, serving as an elected member of the old Strathclyde Regional Council before standing down in 1990.

The couple were married for 65 years.

Mr Carlaw added: “Peter and Judy played an important role to ensure the future of Eastwood within an East Renfrewshire Council outside and independent of Glasgow.

“Judy was practical, solutionsoriented and hard-working on behalf of her constituents.

“In her later years, Judy suffered ill health and loss of mobility but she remained positive and full of life.”

East Renfrewshire Provost Mary Montague also paid tribute to Mrs Edmondson.

She said: “It was sad to learn of the passing of former local councillor Judith Edmondson.

“As Provost of Eastwood District Council, which went before the creation of East Renfrewshire Council, she was a dedicated public servant and made her mark on local history.”
