Campaign aims to save social club from closure
A CAMPAIGN to breathe new life into an East Renfrewshire landmark has been launched as it faces an uncertain future.
Stamperland Community and Social Club, based in the heart of Clarkston, is facing potential closure due to declining attendance and financial pressures.
Described as a “cornerstone of local life since its inception in 1978,” the venue hosts a wide range of gatherings and live music events.
The club now hopes to increase membership and encourage the community to use the facilities there for private functions, in order to safeguard its future.
Gemma Telfer, one of the members, said: “The club was founded over four decades ago by a group of local residents and its origins are a tale of remarkable commitment to community welfare.
“Their investment, obtained by remortgaging their homes, laid the foundation for a space that would see countless celebrations, performances and community events over the years.
“As the club faces this new challenge, the hope is that a new generation of members will step forward, much like the founders, to ensure the club remains a vibrant and integral part of the community.”
The club features a sports lounge, bar and additional lounge, as well as a function suite that can host 120 people.
It is set to host a series of fundraising events and members are appealing for the community’s support via donations of raffle items, people offering their talents for entertainment or by simply spreading the word.
Gemma added: “Every gesture, big or small, is deeply appreciated.
“And please, if you would like to join us, drop into the club for a membership form.”
Existing members are invited to attend the club’s AGM on Thursday, April 25, starting at 7.30pm.
According to the club, this meeting will be vital for shaping its future and, during proceedings, the executive committee will discuss the current financial status and present its strategic recovery plan.
Additionally, it will offer onsite membership renewals for the 2024/25 period, which will not only streamline the process but also significantly aid the club at a difficult time.
Anyone who would like to support the club or become a member is asked to get in touch with officials by sending an email to savethestampy@gmail.com.
