Bass Player

Example 9

-

This exercise is a fast and frantic line that works over the chord changes to the Weather Report classic ‘Teen Town’, on which the great Jaco Pastorius laid down one of his most renowned lines. Pay close attention to the figure on beat three of the first and third bars: after the hammer-on, a note is popped on the D-string and is then followed by a slap on the same note for the start of the next hammer-on. The rhythmic figures can be challenging because of the use of grace notes: these have no actual rhythmic value in the bar and should therefore be played as quickly as possible. Note the use of tenths: a useful device for making bass parts more harmonically interesting.
