Arrest after dispute in square

-

A man arrested in connection with a “dispute” in Kingsmead Square has been released by police. The 20-year-old was arrested after witnesses reported seeing people “armed with machetes” chasing each other in Bath city centre. The suspect was detained on suspicion of affray in Kingsmead Square at lunch time on Thursday last week. Police have now confirmed they have released the man under investigation. His arrest followed unconfirmed reports of men allegedly wielding machetes. At the time, police made no mention of blades being used or wielded, but they have since confirmed that “a number of weapons” are believed to have been used during the incident. Amy Vickers tweeted to say she saw two males chasing each other with blades. Another witness said they saw the police vehicles gathered at around 1.30pm on Thursday. They said: “I spoke to someone who was in Mission Burrito ten minutes prior and from there had seen a number of people running back and forth, at least some of whom were armed with machetes.” Police officers were seen speaking to people outside the Sainsbury’s store on Kingsmead Square on the same day. Avon and Somerset Police said their response was due to a “dispute”. A police spokesman said: “We were called to reports of a disturbance in the Kingsmead Square area at about 1.20pm. “There was a dispute involving a group of black men and another black man. “No injuries reported. “One man was arrested shortly afterwards near Sainsbury’s. “Police enquiries into the incident are continuing.” Anyone with any information is asked to contact police at Bath, quoting 5218178506.
