Sad loss of this year’s annual fete

-

For the first time for more than 70 years the village of Kelston will not be holding it’s annual fete. The fete originates from 1924, when Kelston held it’s first fruit and vegetable show being held annually until the outbreak of the Second World War. After the end of hostilities the fete was restarted being held on August Bank Holiday Monday, as it always has been until this year. After several attempts earlier in the year to get an organising committee together, without any success, combined with nobody being prepared to manage the cream teas which usually brought in the biggest income, it was decided that it would not be possible to hold the fete this year I believe, sadly, that the village loses out twofold. Firstly, the loss of income that contributes to the upkeep of the church, village hall and considers other requests that may come to the post fete meeting. Secondly, and in my opinion just as important, will be the loss of the social side when organising the fete. In this age of social media when texting, twitter, Facebook and other faceless means of communication are used it was always good to meet up and have a chat at the meetings. And finally of course, we mustn’t forget all the visitors who would faithfully turn up for the fete. Even on the occasions when it had been pouring with rain they would usually turn up. Sorry if you are disappointed by not being able to enjoy your annual visit to Kelston Fete this year. Chris Payne Kelston Mills
