Former All Black grasps Lam’s vision

Marquee signing and former all Black Charles Piutau is looking forward to pulling on the Bristol Bears’ jersey for the first time. Joining the club over the summer, having signed up 12 months ago, he cites linking up with his older brother, Siale, as one reason for making the move. Speaking at the Bears’ pre-season press day, Piutau said: “The other factor was Pat Lam’s vision. everyone that he’s brought into the team is very clear on that vision and we can’t wait to fulfil it – starting with the game against Bath.” The pronounced influence of Lam is undoubted; he brought in 21 new players over the summer as wholesale changes were made across the board, a number of whom possess international experience. utility back Piutau signed a lavish contract that reportedly made him the highest-paid player in world rugby, yet he denies the weight of his price tag and claims that under pressure is “when I play my best.” When questioned further on the environment that head coach Lam has created, Piutau praised the professionalism and intimacy that Lam and his management have instilled within the group. “They’re always pushing us to be the best that we can”, he said, “I’m thriving off that and feel like I’m learning a lot.” He even had a kind word for his new home, describing ashton Gate as “a world class facility. I’ve played at a few different stadiums and it’s right up there.” Group camaraderie appears to be the distinguishing feature of this new-look Bristol Bears side. Openly ambitious in their shared goal of gaining Champions’ Cup qualification, Piutau gleamed: “We’re a big family. “We always talk about giving our best to the guy next to us, to not only improve us as rugby players but as people too,” he added. He showed no doubt in the Bears’ potential to achieve their stated aim, affirming: “I definitely believe in the depth of our squad, with the quality of the academy guys coming through.” as last year’s winner of the coveted players’ player of the year in the Pro12 while at ulster, Piutau possesses a combination of brute strength and blistering pace that is sure to bring ashton Gate to its feet. However there is some concern the star man may not be involved in the big season opener. Piutau picked up an achilles tendon strain towards the back end of last season and missed the club’s opening pre-season game against the Scarlets on Saturday, however the 26-year old said he is “feeling really good, physically and mentally.” Perhaps it’s just a precaution, because if Bristol are to be a force in the Premiership they are going to need Piutau at his devastating best on a regular basis. The opening day of a Premiership season is always a special occasion, but particularly so when it’s on home turf against your closest rival. Notwithstanding the novelty of his move to Bristol, Piutau seems to have grasped the magnitude of the game. realising how the fixture places much more than merely league points at stake, he said: “we want to show how proud we are and all the work that we’ve put in.” “There’s going to be a great turnout and as a team we want to put on a great show and come away with the result.” Over to you, Charles.
