Youngsters’ tournament fun

-

Avon RFC staged a successful tag festival for their local eastern cluster of junior schools last week. Around 120 boys and girls in 12 separate teams from Batheaston, Bathford, St Saviour’s and Swainswick schools took part in a roundrobin set of matches in the autumn sunshine at a resplendent-looking Hicks Field. Having been coached by Avon’s schools liaison officer, Andie Parry, over the past year, this festival gave the youngsters the chance to demonstrate their newly-learned skills and to enjoy some exciting games of rugby. The matches were played with great energy and spirit by all the school children and were admirably refereed by pupils from St Mark’s School. The atmosphere and enjoyment on show at the event was summed up by Jenny Enstone of Batheaston School, who said: “What a triumph today was! A huge thank you from the staff and children. The whole event was flawlessly organised and everyone had so much fun. Your coaching sessions last year and this year really came into fruition; it made such a difference with all the children understanding the rules and knowing what to expect. It was also wonderful to see how their play and tactics have progressed.” All the youngsters who took part were given a certificate by Avon chairman Ian Monochino-ayres, while a special sporting trophy was awarded to the Batheaston Tigers team. Avon’s mini section continues its weekly sessions every Sunday morning from 10am at Hicks Field and a warm welcome is awaited for any new boys or girls who want to come along to learn and enjoy the sport of rugby.
