University mourns the death of popular student
The University of Bath community is mourning the loss of a ‘cheeky chap’ who fellow students said was ‘near enough’ involved in everything that the university had to offer.
Rob Tyrrell, 22, who had just been elected the Student Union’s new activities officer, died on Monday, June 29, from an underlying health condition, it is understood.
In hundreds of emotional messages on his virtual memorial board, friends reminisce how Rob was ‘an incredible energy to have around’ and always had a smile on his face.
He had a ‘real sparkling energy’ and ‘lifted the mood’ with just his presence, it was said.
Rob, inset, was studying Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and was involved in many different university groups, as well as being a Freshers’ Week captain and an academic rep.
The Student Union announced the sad news of Rob’s death with ‘deep regret.’
Andrew Mclaughlin, chief executive said: “As the incoming elected activities officer, Rob was very much looking forward to getting started in his new role and working with groups and societies across The SU.
“Our thoughts are with Rob’s family and friends who have lost someone with a natural warmth and enthusiasm that shone through everything he did.
“He will be sadly missed by us all.”
Dr Adrian Evans, head of the
Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, said: “I was really sorry to hear about Rob. “He was actively involved in many aspects of departmental life and was universally liked by everyone he came in to contact with. “His friendly, relaxed personality will be greatly missed by all our staff and students.”
The vice-chancellor and president of the University of Bath has also paid tribute. Professor Ian White said: “I am so very sad to hear of Rob’s death.
“Our community has lost someone who contributed so much and was on the cusp of playing an even more vital role through The SU. “My thoughts are with Rob’s family and many friends at this very difficult time.”
The Student Union said that over the coming weeks it will be liaising with Rob’s family and the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering about remembering Rob and his role in the student community.
Students and staff can leave condolences and record their memories and pictures of Rob on an online memorial forum.
The Student Union has reminded students that Wellbeing Advisors are available to help them by telephone or Skype and can provide a confidential space for students to talk through any feelings or concerns.
They can also point students in the direction of further support or practical help.
Students can also seek support from the University Chaplain, SU Advice & Support, or Cruse Bereavement Care.
