Tagging our children should not be norm
I must wholeheartedly object to your article of July 9 publicising the marketing of “SPACEBAND”, social distancing wristbands for children in schools.
This kind of monitoring is a grotesque assault on children’s most basic human rights.
I sincerely hope these devices do not become the norm in schools. What kind of society are we building when we condition children to accept having alarms attached to their bodies warning about coming into proximity with fellow humans? It’s almost as if these inventors are oblivious to the last two decades of dystopian science fiction cinema.
This goes so far beyond the principle desire to keep people safe and brings us terrifyingly close to a vision of the future almost too bleak to imagine. Did these people not read 1984?
We must not normalise the tagging of children in schools. F Monkman by email
