New centre will provide help to trauma victims

-

A new support unit for trauma survivors has opened in Bath.

With one in five people experiencing trauma in their lifetime, services like city-based mental health charity Breakthrough are a vital resource, and one many don’t realise exists until they need help.

The new Breakthrough Support Centre in Dominion Road, Twerton, comprises individual therapy rooms, a group room and a training room, as well as providing an office base for the charity.

Mayor of Bath Cllr Manda Rigby and city MP Wera Hobhouse opened the new centre.

Ms Hobhouse said: “It is so, so important that we understand trauma, and it is so wonderful that you are creating this service for the people who need help and the people who really need the support and the services to get over their trauma.”

Cllr Rigby added: “As Mayor you’re allowed to choose a theme for a year, and my theme is about combating loneliness.

“A lot of loneliness does come from a feeling of isolation, and a lot of isolation does come from a deep-rooted childhood trauma… what you’re doing speaks very closely to something that I too hold very dear to my heart.”

Breakthrough’s founder and CEO Giles Lascelle said: “Trauma is a major contributor to mental and physical health problems, which is why we are delighted to be able to open up this support centre to help those who are struggling with the legacy of abuse and other forms of trauma.”
