Hat-trick for Buick as racing returns to Bath
Racing returned to Bath for the first time in two weeks on Monday with an eight race card and while there were a number of familiar winning trainers and jockeys, the day really belonged to William Buick who managed a riding hat-trick across the races.
The opening visitbath.co.uk Nursery Handicap was claimed by Clive Cox’s Isabella Swan. Priced at 14/1 the meeting was unusually a good one for the longer odds hopefuls and jockey Adam Kirby was able to rally from being out-paced two furlongs out to lead inside the final furlong and win by half a length.
Afterwards Cox said the filly’s apparent improvement in form was likely to have come from the firsttime application of blinkers, but also appreciated being ridden from a handier position. It was the filly’s first win in her five career races, having finished no higher than fourth previously.

The first of three Irish winners was the longest at 22/1. It was also the first of Buick’s hat-trick as he rode Mark Johnston’s Roseabad to a debut victory by a neck over the favourite after a strong challenge inside the final furlong.

After an awkward start, Edward Greatrex was able to push the gelding along two furlongs out to secure a length and a quarter win for Mark Loughnane. Buick returned on a fourth Irish winner as Zulu Zander claimed a first victory since January for David Evans. The pair made all and ran on well for a two and a half length victory.
Buick’s hat-trick came in the following race Precisely came home by a length and a quarter at 7/2 for John Butler. It was a first win in three races for the filly, who had finished third and second in her other two races.
The final race of the evening was claimed by Lady Elysia at 15/2 for trainer Eve Johnson Houghton, another who has enjoyed recent success at Bath. Ridden by Georgia Dobie, the pair took the lead just over a furlong out and kept on well for a half length success. It marked two consecutive wins for the filly after victory here last month.
The next meeting at Bath is scheduled for Wednesday, October 14 for a seven race card.
