Protesters turn up the heat in demands for fast climate action

-

Environmental campaigners gathered in a peaceful, distanced protest on Friday, December 11, in front of Bath Abbey to support the Fridays for Future #Fightfor1point5 campaign.

Their aim is to raise awareness of the need to keep climate heating under 1.5°C.

The protest included members of Extinction Rebellion, UKSCN, Bath eco bloggers, Greenpeace, Plastic Free Communities and Wicked Weather Watch, together with individual environmentalists and concerned individuals.

In last five years the Earth has reached 1.2°C of warming and experienced wildfires, heatwaves, droughts and rising sea levels in the same period.

Protester Charlotte Howell-jones said: “Missing the targets is essentially a death sentence for many people in the most affected areas.

“We can’t stand by and watch this happen.

“We need to demand action, to secure a safe, nature-filled future for our children, and a safe, fair present for children in the most affected areas.”

The campaigners urged people to demand immediate action from their MP. Their call is for members of the public to email them, call them, and let them know people are not willing to accept inaction.

Charlotte said: “The irony of pledging £12 billion on a green new deal, while spending £27 billion on new roads and £200+ billion on the highly contested HS2 railway that is ripping through our ancient woodlands is not lost on the people of Bath.

“It is a very clear illustration of the Government’s priorities, as we approach an irreversible tipping point that poses an existential threat to us all”.
