Museum reopens and offers treat for mums this Sunday
The American Museum in Bath is to reopen in time for Mother’s Day.
In response to the Government’s latest coronavirus guidelines, the Bath attraction will reopen its gardens, grounds and new children’s play area, The Children’s Garden, from Saturday, March 13.
Visitors and their dogs will be able to enjoy the museum’s many acres of landscaped gardens and parkland and see extensive views across the Limpley Stoke Valley, which is an area of outstanding natural beauty.
American Museum director Richard Wendorf said: “It’s been a very challenging 12 months for everyone, particularly through this most recent lockdown, so we are hoping that our visitors will find some respite and well-being within our grounds.
“We have decided to freeze admission prices this year, for we understand how difficult it’s been financially.”
Museum duty manager Fiona Blades said: “Aside from the spectacular views on offer, visitors can expect to see our spring flowers in full bloom, as well as some tasty takeaway treats and drinks.
“We will also be giving away a free cream tea to all the mums that visit us on Mother’s Day on Sunday 14th March. There is plenty of outdoor space at the museum, so visitors will be able to social distance; there will also be a number of hand sanitiser stations placed around the grounds, and all staff members will be wearing face masks.”
The hilltop site of the museum’s home, Claverton Manor, overlooks the Bath countryside, and its grounds contain remnants of the old Italianatestyle manorial pleasure gardens and parkland, which date from the 1820s. Visitors can make their way around the accessible Winding Way, which encircles the lawn, threads through the American Rose Collection, and skirts the natural amphitheatre, which the museum hopes will serve as the site of concerts and outdoor events this year.
The museum is the only one outside the United States to showcase the decorative arts of America.
The permanent collection includes more than 200 historic American quilts, exceptional pieces of Shaker furniture, Native American objects, and 200 historical maps of the New World from the 12th century to the Renaissance.
No advance tickets are required. For admission details visit the museum website: https://americanmuseum.org/visiting-us/admission-prices.
