Bath Chronicle

Do you have memories of when the Beatles played the Pavilion?

-

I notice that Bath Pavilion are screening photos of the pop groups that played there in the 1963-1969 period, which made me think that now was a good time to ask Chronicle readers to come forward and tell me if they have seen or met the group, or come into contact with John, George, Paul or Ringo in other places, or seen them playing live.

If you have an opinion about the Beatles, love them or hate them, please let me know, as I plan to write a book on the Beatles in the West Country, as a follow up to Twist & Shout (inset) which I wrote mainly about the Pavilion concert on 10th June 1963.

That book is available from Mr B’S Emporium bookshop in John Street Bath, priced £10.

The Pavilion concert was promoted by the late Fred Bannister who brought a lot of joy to Bath teenagers in the period 1963 to 1969, when he put on a concert every Monday night, often with a major chart act plus two local groups all for five bob (25p today).

An excellent night out when you could see all the regulars from Top of the Pops right in front of you in your home town, including The Who, Cream, Small Faces, Rolling Stones, Hermans Hermits, The Byrds, Led Zeppelin, and many American rock and rollers. If you have an opinion on the Beatles as a group, or individually, please email me at sphurford@yahoo. co.uk with your comments, or photos or flyers or programmes, and I will put them in the new book. Your views are important to me and your input is what pop music is all about. Readers’ response to my original appeal was fantastic and I thank everyone who got in touch.
