Volunteer team gives fresh look to Bog Island fountain

-

A group of volunteers have revamped the fountain on ‘Bog Island’ in Bath.

Members of Bath in Bloom – the competition that encourages floral displays and raises awareness of environmentally-friendly gardening in the area – recently teamed up to redesign the site of the 19th-century fountain in one of the city’s busiest areas.

The fountain, in Terrace Walk, is commonly known by many as ‘Bog Island’ due to the fact that it used to hold the entrance to public toilets complete with showers.

The fountain was originally situated in Stall Street outside the Pump Room until about 30 years ago when it was dismantled stone by stone and rebuilt in its present position in Terrace Walk.

Bath in Bloom committee members and volunteers spent a day clearing the site and planting a variety of evergreen shrubs.

The planting was designed to enhance and complement the classical architecture of the fountain and was finished off with a ton of Bath stone coloured gravel mulch.

The planting was designed by committee chairman Steve Brook to enhance and complement the classical architecture of the fountain.

Bath in Bloom president Barry Cruse said: “We have been wanting to do it for a long time. It’s totally different from anything in Bath.

“The planting is sustainable and won’t need watering and it will just need tidying up once or twice a year, which is what we’re after as due to the lack of funds we need to make sure everything lasts a long time.

“Thanks to Steve, he has been the driving force behind it and he actually designed the bed.”
