Brexiteers got what they were warned of

Euel Lane (Letters, April 1) seems to be a very angry man. I think the best response to him is: “You won, get over it!” Or rather, you got what you were warned you would get if you let the Brexit extremists take control. I think his main problem is that he has that weird idea of democracy which Brexit extremists have – that it must stop after the referendum and that no matter what promises were made to sway people’s votes, it gave carte blanche to the Brexit fanatics to override any democratic safeguards and do anything they wanted. We remember the illegal attempts to prorogue Parliament, the vilification of our independent judiciary and, of course, the threats to renege on international treaties. Of course they would not allow any further votes as that would “not be democratic”. Funny that – if they were so sure “the nation had spoken” why did they not confirm it and we would all have been happy.

Mr Lane lashed out at “fifth columnists” undermining Brexit – that means anyone trying to uphold democracy. He conveniently forgets that the real fifth columnists undermining the country were the Brexit extremists and their Russian backers. It is odd that Putin and Trump were their most vociferous supporters. The US got rid of

Trump and his populist nonsense, it is a shame that we are stuck with ours.

It is true that Mrs May was not a Brexit fanatic, but (under pressure from the extremists) it was her ridiculous “red lines” which prevented any sensible settlement. But even her planned deal was more sensible than Boris “get Brexit done” Johnson’s disaster which left a border in the Irish sea. This, incidentally, was something Johnson himself had said that “no British Prime Minister could contemplate”! And now we have increasing unrest in Northern Ireland.

Incidentally, I think we all had a chuckle at the April Fool joke – the suggestion of an honour for Farage. Best laugh for a long time!
