Car wipes out road sign in early morning collision

-

A car has smashed through a road sign in a village outside Bath, flattening it completely.

The crash happened around 7.35am on Sunday, when the vehicle ploughed through traffic calming measures on Bathford High Street.

Police were called to the scene and say they have spoken to the driver of the vehicle.

A local woman, who did not wish to be named, said: “We heard it happen, it actually woke us up.

“I suspect it happened because of the early morning sun, he maybe didn’t see the sign, but it’s meant to be a 20mph limit anyway.

“It’s not the first time it’s happened. When it first went up a similar accident took place and this is been the cause of a number of accidents over the years.

“It is dangerous and unhealthy and does not cause traffic to slow down.”

She added that the crash must have been “quite a shock” for the two people in the car and that members of the parish council had swept most of the debris from the road surface.

“They have also put a high-vis jacket over the sign until something is done about it, so people can see it,” she said.

Avon and Somerset Police said they were called to the scene a few hours after the crash.

On Monday, a spokesman said: “A member of the public reported seeing damaged street furniture yesterday morning at the junction of High Street and Ashley Road which they believed may have been caused in a collision. Police attended and managed to identify the registered keeper of a vehicle involved. Contact was made with them to ensure they were safe and that the vehicle will be recovered.”
