Champions are crowned after belated events

-

Bath Golf Club recently held both their Ladies and Men’s Club Championships. These are usually played during the summer but the amended schedule for the year deferred these to the start of autumn.

The first round of the Ladies Club Championship started with rain, mist and fog. This did not put off the hardy 24 intrepid golfers who played with waterproofs on, umbrellas up and smiles firmly on faces. The first tee looked very inviting decked with red cyclamen and official starters were provided by the club to keep everything running smoothly. Thanks were given to Andy Robinson and Fay Galley who gave up their time to start every one off.

The first round scores, given the weather, were excellent and the leader had given herself a 13 shot head start for the final round. Jess Hays put in a brilliant round of 73, one under the course par and two under her handicap.

Twelve pairs went out in reverse order on Wednesday, in near perfect conditions, with some excellent scores. A superb score of gross 149 over 36-holes by Hays was enough to see her crowned champion.

Sam Robinson came second with a gross 177, Andrea Phillips was third with 186. The Meek Silver Salver was won by Catherine Hughes with the lowest nett score of 143 over the two rounds, who pipped Alison Rushgrove into second on countback.

The Men’s Club Championship was held over 36 holes in one day in warm, dry conditions and fast greens meant low scoring wasn’t easy. Liam O’mara, whose tworound gross score of 146 was enough to pip Kelvin Green by a single shot to claim the title. Jim Brown secured first place in the nett competition with a score of 135, two better than Anthony Jones’ 137.

The trophies were presented by club captain Tony Mccallum.

Bath’s men are into the last 16 of the Annodata Cup, a nationwide club knockout competition after a fifth round win over a team from Dartmouth Golf & Country Club last Sunday.

In fine warm conditions, Bath won 4-1 from a strong line-up of Kelvin Green, Richard Longhurst, Jim Brown, Tony Mccallum and Martin Cashnella. They now face a trip to Ilfracombe Golf Club.
