Wordon wins junior championsh­ip at Bath

Another raft of competitio­ns took place at Bath Golf Club this week.

The ladies played in a Burningham and Brown Stableford in fine, warm conditions and scoring was very good. Division One and the overall competitio­n was won by Stephanie Moorfoot with a fine 41 points, two better than Louise Buxton with Samantha Robinson third on 38.

Top of Division Two was Ann Tonge with 39, just ahead of Louise Blake on countback with Marilyn Kirby third on 38. Division Three was won by Janet Tope with 38, one ahead of Carol England with Jennifer Catchpole third on 35.

The ladies have also completed three of their summer knockout competitio­ns recently. The winners of the Sheila Taylor Foursomes were Elizabeth Bloor & Alison Rushgrove who beat Mary Perkins and Pippa Western in the final.

The Boschi Cup is a singles knockout for players under 30 handicap and Philippa Bevan was this year’s winner, beating Louise Buxton in the final. The Castle Trophy, a singles knockout for handicaps of over 30, was won by Polly Andrews who defeated Penny Ross in the final.

The men played a Stableford, with early fog giving way to a fine day. The winner of Division One was Richard Longhurst with a fine 40 points, two better than James Portman who beat James Meddick on countback. Division Two and the overall competitio­n was won by Andy Akers with a great 42 points, only just pipping Keith Lunt on countback. Dennis Winman was third with 41.

Top of Division Three was Steve Hammond on 40, beating Ben Laite on countback with Neil Callaway third on 39.

During the season, scores in the five major medal trophies are logged and the best three aggregated in each to find the winner of the Hobbs Cup (gross scores) and the Weeks Trophy (nett scores). The winner of the Hobbs Cup for 2021 was Peter Forster with a score of 222. James Portman was the winner of the Weeks Trophy with a score of 212.

Bath also awarded their Order of Merit title to the best overall performanc­e in all qualifying competitio­ns throughout the season and the winner for 2021 was Lewis Cains ahead of Tony Jones and Mike Gale.

The juniors played their Club Championsh­ip and the winner with a fine score of 73 was Matt Wordon. The winner of the Perroquet Cup for nett scores (under 11 handicap) was Luke Charlwood with nett 70 and Joshua Knight won the Nomads Cup for the best nett score (11 handicap and over) with nett 68.
