Brexit has made us a laughing stock

-

I share Peter Dorey’s fears (letters 30th September) about right-wing correspondents like Geoff Brooking wanting to shut down all opposition just because they disagree with it.

I am afraid that people like Mr Brooking see everyone who is not as right-wing as them to be leftwing, whereas most are centre or centre-right.

Like the extremists in the Tory party, he attacks the BBC and Channel 4 as left-wing because they do not blindly follow the Tory line.

Personally, I find the BBC a bit right-wing, but I accept it. He criticises the BBC for appointing an anti-brexit news chief - well she had to be one or the other, and Mr Brooking might be surprised that only die-hards like him are in favour of the type of crazy Brexit that we were steamrollered into by this Government.

The BBC news job does require a degree of intellectual heft and it is difficult to find such people in the ranks of pro-brexiters. This is the problem with the current Cabinet.

Anyone with any talent was purged and replaced by those whose only qualification was their devotion to the Brexit ideology.

This explains the procession of useless ministers we have had such as Matt Hancock, Priti Patel, Gavin

Williamson... the list goes on. Now we add Nadine Dorries, of whom Mr Brooking seems to be a fan. She is certainly right-wing enough and ideologically pure, even if a bit hard of thinking.

Of course we are not allowed to mention Brexit in connection with the current haulage and fuel crisis.

Surely this could not possibly be connected with a policy predicated on getting rid of foreign workers, and which now can be cured by importing more foreign workers. That would be madness !

Friends of ours in Austria, The Netherlands and Germany are extremely sad and worried about the state of our country. We used to be well respected for our liberal democracy and the stability of our institutions. Now we are a laughing stock. Well done Brexit. Well at least there isn’t a clown shortage in this country.
