Unbeaten Larkhall score nine past rivals

-

Larkhall Athletic had a day to remember on Saturday as they put nine past Barnstaple Town in the Southern League Division One South to maintain their unbeaten run in the league.

Barnstaple actually took a surprise lead inside the first minute through Rhys Thomas before parity was restored within two minutes when Lewis Powell picked up a pass from Tom Fry, spun round on the edge of the area and equalised.

The goals then began to flow as Larkhall powered into a 5-1 halftime lead. Man of the match Matt Britton poached his first from close range for 2-1 before Sam Crumb added a third moments later with a header. Britton volleyed home Larkhall’s fourth and although Dominic Larter pulled off a double save for Barnstaple, Tom Fry was on hand for his first competitive goal with a stunning free-kick.

Seven minutes into the second half, Britton secured his hat-trick before Alex Lambert netted on the rebound after another good save from Larter to make it 7-1. As fulltime beckoned, Britton scored his fourth of the afternoon, with Powell grabbing his second in injury time before also hitting the post as Larkhall just missed out doubled figures.

Larkhall progressed through in the Somerset Premier Cup on Tuesday, narrowly edging out Western League Street in a sudden death penalty shoot-out. The Cobblers took the lead before Larkhall levelled the tie in the second half to force penalties.

After Street missed their first spot-kick, Larkhall took a 3-2 lead before missing their fourth kick at 3-3. Level after five, the game fell to sudden death and Street missed their seventh penalty to lose the tie.

Tracey Hill ■ WESTERN LEAGUE Previous Premier Division table-toppers Bitton had an afternoon to forget, suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat at home to Keynsham Town. There was only one goal in a quiet opening half, with Matt Brown breaking the deadlock in the 20th minute after reacting quickest to a loose ball inside the home yard’s six-yard box.

Town started the second half strongly, and after doubling their lead through Jordan Anstey, Stefan Lee then struck to put the result beyond doubt. Bitton grabbed a late lifeline when Jack Ball tapped home, but the K’s had the last word with Lee scoring his second two minutes from time to wrap up an impressive victory.

Division One second-place Oldland Abbotonians managed to hold off the challenge of Odd Down, just about doing enough to run out 4-3 victors against the Bath side.

The Abbots twice went in front a thrilling first half, with Andrew Nash scoring both goals for the hosts, only to see Odd Down respond on each occasion to make it 2-2 at the interval.

A Josh Dempsey goal put Oldland back in front, with the terrific Nash then completing his hat-trick 20 minutes from time to finally keep the away side at bay.

Keynsham Town held off a late charge from Wincanton Town to secure their place in the next round of the Somerset Premier Cup. Keynsham raced into a 3-0 lead courtesy of a Matt Brown hat-trick which saw him reach 100 goals for the club in 198 appearances. Wincanton scored twice late on, but Keynsham held on win 3-2 and progress.

Tom Hiscott ■ HELLENIC LEAGUE Football proved difficult to play on Saturday in the atrocious conditions felt around the region. It was especially so at The Southbank as Corsham Town were held to a goalless draw by Shrivenham.

Bradford Town were beaten by a single goal at Tuffley Rovers. George Box forced a good save from the keeper after getting on the end of a low ball across the box from Jake Brown. Tuffley thought they had taken the lead but had a goal ruled out for offside as it remained 0-0 at half-time.

Tuffley weren’t to be denied though and took the lead just after the restart through Joseph Shutt. After a delay due to Bradford’s keeper needing treatment, the Bobcats almost found an equaliser when Harry Rutty’s header hit the bar before Tuffley were able to clear from a goalmouth scramble from another corner to hold onto the points.

■ WILTSHIRE LEAGUE Corsham Town Development played out an eight-goal thriller as they held Malmesbury Victoria Development to a drew with ten men. Dominic Kilbane was sent off for Corsham four minutes before half-time but second half goals from Lew Mccarron, Adam Mitchell and substitute Max Wyatt, alongside a strike from Will Stead, helped Corsham to a 4-4 draw.

■ SOMERSET SENIOR CUP Keynsham Town Reserves were handed a home walkover against Saltford to move into the second round without kicking a ball. Peasedown Miners Welfare scored twice but they were beaten 3-2 at home to Somerton Town.

Fry Club needed a low-scoring penalty shoot-out to get past Stockwood Green. Mark Richards scored twice alongside a goal for Toby Cooke as the sides drew 3-3 over the 90 minutes, before two penalty saves from Fry’s keeper helped them 3-2.

Tim Midgley netted a hat-trick as Timsbury Athletic cantered through with a 7-1 victory against AFC Brislington. Toby Neilson, Jesse Bishop and Reuben Hobbs were amongst the other goalscorers. Tunley Athletic lost 2-0 at Imperial. Odd Down Reserves

eased through with a 4-0 win at home to Highridge United.

■ IN the league, a double from Danny Lock and a goal for James Phillips helped Fry Club Reserves to a 3-0 win over Clevedon United Reserves in Division Three. Braces for Ellis Hancock and substitute Jack Davis handed Timsbury Athletic a 4-1 win at Welton Rovers Reserves in Division One on Tuesday.

■ MID SOMERSET LEAGUE Peasedown Albion shared nine goals with Farrington Albion in Division

One as they ran out 6-3 winners. Luke Higgins and Ionut-viorel Ranete both claimed braces alongside goals for Kevin Allen and Ioan Muresan. Justin Dowling scored for Timsbury Athletic Reserves but they were beaten 4-1 at Haydon Sports.

Saltford Reserves continued their unbeaten start to the campaign with a 6-0 thrashing at home to Frome Collegians Reserves. Jordan Finch, Harry Gethin, Callum Hinder, Andy Jones, Archie Roach and Scott Wilson all helped themselves to a goal.
