Gill checks out Banbury United on scouting trip

-

Jerry Gill was in attendance at Bromsgrove Sporting on Tuesday to scout on Banbury United ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup tie at the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium.

Andy Whing’s men took the lead inside two minutes through Jack Stevens, before Connor Taylor levelled 10 minutes later for the hosts.

Chris Wreh, son of the former Arsenal striker with the same name, netted on 42 minutes to regain the lead for the visitors, just 60 seconds after he had seen a penalty saved.

Benjamin Acquaye wrapped up the points for the Step 3 challengers with 17 minutes remaining.

In the FA Cup, Banbury have beaten Ardley United, Nantwich

Town and Basford United to reach this stage for a second year running. Last season they defeated Step 4 Bury Town in the 4th Qualifying Round before losing to Canvey Island in their first First Round appearance since 1973.

Bath have seen off Shaftesbury and Frome Town of Step 5 and Step 4 respectively without conceding.

They’ve won all six of their FA Cup ties against lower league opponents under Gill, a run which started against Banbury in September 2018 when a first half Ross Stearn double was enough against Mike Ford’s side, who rarely threatened on a wet afternoon.

“I thought we played some scintillating stuff,” said Gill after that contest. “Without their goalkeeper being outstanding it could have been four or five.”

The Puritans still have goalkeeper Jack Harding on their books as well as Giorgio Rasulo, man-ofthe-match on Tuesday, whereas five players remain at Bath from that 2nd Qualifying Round tie – Ryan Clarke, Joe Raynes, Jack Batten, Tom Smith and Dan Ball.

The winners receive £9,375 and a place in the draw for the 1st Round, where League One and Two sides enter, which takes place at 1.05pm on Sunday live on ITV.
