Disappointed with Prince Charles
I thought Prince Charles was an ardent supporter of British agriculture and I was surprised and disappointed to hear that he is cutting out eating meat, fish and dairy products for two days a week, all of which are natural foods and better than processed products.
All this talk of rewilding will put farmers out of business, when we need to – and could – produce more of our own food, as agriculture is one of our main industries in Britain.
Instead, we will have to rely even more on foreign food imports, which will cost us more and, if problems arise, we could be held to ransom.
Farming is a way of life and farmers work all hours when necessary, they have a hard enough time as it is, made more stressful with all the often pointless petty rules and regulations put on them by Defra.
I do get the impression that George Eustice is more interested in keeping his position at Defra rather than supporting the farmers.
Farmers have looked after their land and animals for many generations and without them, we wouldn’t have the beautiful countryside we have now.
Rewilding would destroy not just farming but the land would be covered in trees, bushes and weeds, and no one would be able to go for walks and enjoy the countryside views, because of the overgrown undergrowth and dense woodland. Our holiday and tourist trade would be non-existent. There must be a happy medium.
Farmers’ livelihoods must not suffer any more than they do now. They need more support and not the criticism they continually get. Helen Capel by email
